Product overview

Stiffer walls and level ceilings.

Steel studs are open sections that tend to rotate under load. Running bridging channel horizontally through the stud knockouts and connecting it at each stud, usually with a bridging clip, ties the studs together so the wall resists twisting from wind or axial load.

In ceilings, the same channel works as a carrying channel. It is hung from hanger wire or rods, and furring channel is tied or clipped beneath it to receive drywall. Saturn Metal offers 3/4″ and 1-1/2″ sizes in 18 or 16 gauge, in 10′ and 12′ lengths.

Carrying Channel / Bridging Channel / Bracing Channel

Carrying, bridging and bracing channel, also called U channel, is one small steel channel with three jobs. As carrying channel it is the main runner of a suspended drywall ceiling, hung on wire with furring channel tied below; as bridging channel it passes through the stud knockouts to tie a row of studs together; and as bracing channel it braces studs against twisting and bowing. It comes in 3/4″ × 1/2″ and 1-1/2″ × 1/2″ sizes, in 43 and 54 mil steel with G60 minimum coating. Channel size, spacing and connections follow the ceiling or wall design. Data sheet DS-10 covers the profiles, sizes, approximate weights, suspended ceiling layout and bridging details.

It is one U channel named for its job. As carrying channel it is hung on wire as the main runner of a suspended drywall or plaster ceiling. As bridging channel it runs through the stud knockouts and is clipped to every stud. As bracing channel that same row braces each stud against twisting and bowing.

3/4″ × 1/2″ (75U50) for bridging 1-5/8″ and 2-1/2″ studs and light furring work. 1-1/2″ × 1/2″ (150U50) for bridging 3-5/8″ studs and deeper, through the standard 1-1/2″ knockout, and as the main runner of suspended ceilings.

18 gauge is the common choice for interior bridging and ceilings. 16 gauge suits longer hanger spacings, heavier ceilings and bridging in structural walls, where the design asks for it.

Ends are plain. Lengths are lapped, nested and screwed or tied at splices.
