Product overview

Load-Bearing Stud Framing System

Structural steel studs frame load-bearing walls, exterior infill and curtain walls, headers and tall interior partitions. The range covers 138 C-stud sections, with webs from 1-5/8″ to 14″, flanges from 1-1/4″ to 3″ and thicknesses from 33 to 97 mil (20 to 12 ga), each identified by a standard designator such as 600S162-54. Members are specified to ASTM C955, designed to CSA S136 and galvanized to ASTM A653, and they work with matching standard, deep-leg and slotted track, bridging channel and clips. Studs from 33 mil come in the length you order. Member sizes, spacing and connections are chosen by the project’s structural engineer. Data sheet DS-02 shows profiles, sizes, approximate weights, details and specifying notes.

Load-bearing walls carrying floors and roofs, exterior curtain walls, infill and bypass walls under wind load, headers, jambs and posts at openings, parapets, tall interior walls and walls with heavy finishes.

Load-bearing and exterior walls need a structural design. Member size, thickness, spacing, bracing and connections come from the project’s design professional.

The designator gives web depth and flange width in 1/100 inch, the member type and the minimum base-steel thickness. 600S162-54 is a 6″ web stud (S) with a 1-5/8″ flange in 16 gauge steel. Order by part number, length and quantity, for example 600S162-54 × 12′-6″.

As general guidance: 1-1/4″ for heavier interior walls, 1-5/8″ for most load-bearing and curtain walls, 2″ for wider bearing for sheathing and connections, 2-1/2″ for heavy loads, and 3″ for very heavy loads and longer spans. The design sets the flange.

Track of the same web width: standard track with 1-1/4″ legs, deep-leg track with 2″ or 3″ legs, or slotted deflection track at the head of the wall. Track legs have no lips.
