Slotted Track

Head-of-wall track fixed to the structure above. Its 2-1/2″ legs have vertical slots and the studs are screwed through the slots, so floors and roofs can move up and down while the studs below stay where they are.

Product overview

Slotted Deflection Track

Slotted deflection track is used at the head of a wall where the floor or roof above moves under load. Vertical slots in the track legs take the stud screws, so the structure above can deflect up and down without bearing on the studs, while the studs stay held in line. The track comes in 34 sizes, from 2-1/2″ to 12″ wide and 18 to 97 mil thick, with a deep 2-1/2″ leg (designator example 600ST250-54). It is often used with fire-rated head-of-wall joint systems, which must follow the listed joint design. The deflection gap, screw position and fastening are set by the project design. Data sheet DS-05 explains how the slots work and shows the head-of-wall details.

At the head of interior partitions under floors and roofs that deflect, infill curtain walls between floor slabs, walls under long-span joists, steel deck and post-tensioned slabs, fire-rated walls with a listed head-of-wall joint system, and shaft and corridor walls that must not carry load from above.

No. A slotted head keeps floor and roof load out of the wall. Load-bearing studs are seated in standard track instead.

No. The slots run the full length of both legs, so studs can sit at any spacing, and for most walls no separate clip is needed at each stud.

Width in 1/100 inch, ST for slotted track, leg length in 1/100 inch, then thickness. 600ST250-54 is a 6″ slotted track with 2-1/2″ legs in 16 gauge.

Yes, with a listed head-of-wall joint system. The deflection gap, screw position and fastening must follow the listed joint design and the project design.
