Product overview

7/8" Furring Channel (Hat Channel)

7/8″ furring channel, also called hat channel or furring bar, gives a flat, true surface for gypsum board on masonry and concrete walls and on ceilings. The hat-shaped profile is 7/8″ deep with a 1-1/4″ screw face and two flanges, in 18, 33 and 43 mil galvanized steel. On walls it is fastened through the flanges to the masonry; on ceilings it is tied or clipped under carrying channel, or fixed directly to joists. Spacing follows the board type and the project design, commonly 16″ or 24″ on centre. Custom hat sections are also offered to order. Data sheet DS-11 shows the profile, wall and ceiling details, approximate weights and installation notes.

They are the same 7/8″ member. Furring channel is the trade name, hat channel describes its hat-shaped section, and furring bar is another name used on site. Its designator is 087F125.

25 gauge is the common drywall furring channel for walls and ceilings carrying gypsum board. 20 gauge suits heavier board, longer spans, abuse-resistant or multi-layer assemblies. 18 gauge suits cladding and heavier finishes, wider support spacings, and where screws need more steel to bite into.

On walls it is fastened through the feet to the masonry or concrete. On ceilings it is tied or clipped under carrying channel, or fixed directly to joists. Gypsum board is screwed to the face.
