Product overview

Galvanized Ceiling Suspension Wire, 9 ga and 12 ga, 12' Lengths

Hanger wire hangs suspended drywall and plaster ceilings from the structure above. It comes in 9 ga (0.148″) and 12 ga (0.1055″) galvanized steel wire, in 12′ straight lengths, bundled for site handling. Each wire is fixed to the structure, run down to the carrying channel and wrapped tightly around itself; diagonal wires can be added to resist sideways movement. Wire size, spacing and anchors are set by the ceiling design and the load it carries. Data sheet DS-15 shows suspended ceiling layouts, wire wrapping details, approximate pieces per bundle and reference strength values for orientation.

9 gauge for heavier ceilings and 12 gauge for lighter ones. The ceiling designer sets the hanger size, spacing and safety factor.

Tie the top end through an anchor, around a joist chord or through an eye lag, run the wire straight and plumb, then saddle-tie it around the carrying channel and twist it tight. Diagonal wires can be added to resist sideways movement.

Computed reference loads at a 4:1 factor are about 215 lb for 9 ga and 109 lb for 12 ga, for the wire alone. The load a hanger may carry also depends on the anchor, the ties and the governing code; the anchor must be rated for the same load.

No. 18 ga tie wire is for tying members together. Hanger wire carries the ceiling load.
