Product overview
Tie wire is a soft 18 ga (0.047″) galvanized steel wire used to tie furring channel to carrying channel at every crossing in a suspended ceiling, to lap and tie metal lath, and to secure framing at control joints. It comes in 27″ and 42″ lengths, in bundles of about 25 lb, and twists tight by hand or with pliers. Tie wire is for tying members together, not for hanging a ceiling; hanger wire carries the ceiling load. The number of ties follows the ceiling or lath design, and fire-rated ceilings often call for ties at every crossing. Data sheet DS-16 covers tying methods, ties per area and typical details.

27″ for single ties: furring to carrying channel, lath to channels, lath laps and short saddle ties. 42″ for doubled ties where the design calls for them, and ties around larger members or deeper channels.
No. Tie wire is for tying members together; hanger wire carries the ceiling load.
A 25 lb bundle of 27″ ties covers about 1,880 ties. Count one tie per crossing, doubled where the design calls for it, plus lath ties, and add a margin for waste.
