Product overview
J trim (JT) caps an exposed gypsum board edge where no joint compound finish is wanted, for example at columns, window mullions, access panels and against other materials. The board slides into the J, and the 3/8″ return covers the cut edge with a neat, hemmed finish. JT comes for 3/8″, 1/2″ and 5/8″ board, in galvanized steel, in 8′ and 10′ lengths, to ASTM C1047. Data sheet DS-20 shows the profile, a plan section at a column and the installation steps.

The 3/8″ leg lies on the board face as a straight steel line, so the edge is finished as installed. Board and trim are primed and painted together.
The trim is slipped onto the board edge before the board is fastened; the board slides into the J and the back flange sits between the board and the framing.
The web must match the board: 1/2″ trim on 1/2″ board, 5/8″ on 5/8″. The wrong size leaves the board loose in the J or will not fit.
At window and door openings and wherever the board stops against another surface: columns, window mullions, concrete, masonry and wall or ceiling intersections.
